Bloemhof plantation holds a rich and storied past dating to the 18th century. Initially established around 1735, the estate flourished as a water plantation, providing water to people living in town and the surrounding countryside. It once was vital in Curaçao’s colonial economy. Walking in the park, you can still see the remnants of the original waterworks, such as dams, cisterns, wells, and windmills. There may have been laraha, aloe, corn, and divi-divi crops in the past, but no traces of farming can now be found on the premises.
Over time, the plantation evolved, transforming into a cultural hub, embracing the arts, and becoming a haven for creativity. The historic mansion and the outer buildings, built in the traditional Curaçao architectural style, became the bustling center of Bloemhof.
In the 20th century, a significant figure emerged in the Curaçao art scene: Shon May Henriquez. She had grown up playing and learning at Bloemhof, a young lady eager to spend time with the extended family, discuss new concepts with her tutor, and learn from the people working there. She captured the lessons she observed with her art, writings, and actions.
May was a talented artist and became a patron of the arts. Under her custody, Bloemhof became a bohemian place where people could gather and express themselves creatively and be inspired. Her legacy and her family’s support have played a crucial role in the preservation and transformation of Bloemhof into the vibrant cultural center it is today.
Today, Bloemhof is a legacy of the island’s rich heritage. It welcomes visitors to explore its historic buildings, stroll through its lush gardens, and immerse themselves in the captivating world of art and nature.
